How To Care For A Garment That Was Built To Last
We build garments to be worn for years, not seasons, but the garment can only hold up its end of that promise if it is cared for properly. Here is what we tell every client who asks.
Wash less than you think you need to. Most tailored pieces and many everyday garments do not need washing after every wear. Airing a garment out on a proper hanger, away from direct sun, resets it more than people expect, and every wash cycle is a small amount of wear on the fibers.
Address small repairs immediately. A loose button or a small pulled thread takes minutes to fix and, left alone, becomes a larger repair within a few wears. We would rather see a client bring in a garment for a five minute fix than wait until the damage has spread.
Store garments properly between seasons. Wool needs to breathe and should never go into an airtight bag for long term storage. Cedar blocks and proper hangers do more for a garment's lifespan than any spray or treatment.
Finally, use a tailor, even after the original purchase. Bodies change, garments settle, and a small adjustment two years after a purchase can extend a garment's useful life by years. We offer this service for anything we have made, and we would rather see a piece adjusted than replaced.
